This year, Bollywood- which constitutes a large part of the money cashed out by Indian films domestically and internationally witnessed a considerable set back. The usual crowd pullers managed to garner some due attention, but Bollywood films overall witnessed a rather drab year. Even the expected year end big film ‘Padmavati’ was cancelled and another blow was felt. Tamil and Telugu movies managed to balance out some of the loss experienced and some offbeat hits like Newton, doing well at the Box Office was a rather happy surprise in this uneventful year.

Second Installment of the Epic Bahubali: The Beginning (2015) directed by SS Rajamouli, Bahubali: The Conclusion, became the second highest-grossing Indian movie worldwide, after Dangal. However in the domestic market the film performed largely better than Dangal becoming the year’s biggest hit. Made on a budget of Rs.250 crore, the film made Rs.1115.6 crore in Indian alone. Bahubali 2 is about Shiva, the son of Bahubali, who learns about his heritage, and begins to look for answers. His story is juxtaposed with past events that unfolded in the Mahishmati Kingdom. The film features, Prabhas, Rana Daggubatti, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan and Tamannah Bhatia.

Inspired by real events, Tiger Zinda Hai is a sequel to the blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger, and an espionage action thriller that follows an adventurous rescue mission in Iraq. The second Salman Khan film of the year released in December, made on Rs.150 crore budget, earned a sweeping Rs.272.1 crore and is still running in cinema halls. Starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the film is apparently working towards breaking more records.

Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal franchise is a guaranteed crowd puller and as a result a money spinner. The fourth installment of the series, revolves around the beloved characters with a few new faces. Made on a budget of Rs 95 crore, the film made Rs.202 crore in the Indian market. Golmaal Again stars Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Tabu, Arshad Warsi, Tushar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu, and Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees was a much anticipated film and was an evident hit, owing to actors huge fan following. Based on the real life story of Abdul Latif, the film was made on Rs.100 crore budget. The film made a total of Rs.129 crore in the domestic market. Raees stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Atul Kulkarni along with Shah Rukh Khan.

Mersal directed by Atlee Kumar is a Tamil movie about a magician and a doctor’s attempt to expose the corruption at the heart of India’s medical industry. Made on a budget of around Rs.95 crore the film made Rs.144.10 Crore. The film got more attention due to a couple of scenes where Vijay comments on GST and Digital India. Mersal stars Thalapathy Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menon and Kajal Aggarwal.

David Dhawan’s remake of his own 90’s Salman Khan-movie starring his son, Varun Dhawan, was a raging hit at the box office. Loved for the music and Varun Dhawan, the film was huge success. Made on a budget of Rs.75 crore, the movie earned Rs.132.4 crore nationwide. The movie also stars Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez.

Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was another mediocre film that managed to rank decently at the box office this year. The movie was made on a budget of Rs.40 crore and managed to make Rs.132.1 crore in the Indian market. The movie stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, and Anupam Kher.

Despite being a disappointing film and a critical failure on many levels, Salman Khan’s fans enabled another box office hit for the Star. Made on a budget of Rs.100 crore the film made a total of Rs.116.7 crore in the domestic scenario. Starring Sohail Khan, Om Puri, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Matin Rey Tangu and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, along with Salman Khan, the film is directed by Kabir Khan, of the Bajrangi Bhaijan fame.

This Telugu movie, featuring star Chiranjeevi was written by AR Murugadoss. Khaidi no.150 is about a man (Chiranjeevi) on the wrong side of the law, moved by the plight of farmers to do the right thing. Made on a budget of Rs. 65 crore, the film recovered around Rs. 42 crore on its opening day itself. The film made Rs.121.5 crore notionwide. Khaidi no.150 also stars Kajal Aggarwal and features Ram Charan in a special appearance.

 

Badrinath Ki Dulhania:

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is one of the truly decent films from this year. The second instalment after Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, was made on a budget of Rs. 40 crore and collected Rs. 112.5 crore in India. The super hit film stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.
