Spanish filmmaker to be given Lifetime Achievement Award at the 18th IFFK
Renowned Spanish filmmaker and photographer Carlos Saura will be given Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremony of the 18th International Film Festival of Kerala to be held on December 6 evening.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the opening ceremony and actors Shabana Azmi and Manju Warrier will grace the occasion.
The festival, having a total of 16 sections, will be attended by more than 120 guests. The Competition section, the main attraction of the festival, includes 14 films from Asian, African and Latin American countries.
Two Malayalam films – ‘101 Chodyangal’ by Sidharth Siva and ‘Kaliyachan’ by Farook Abdul Rahiman are part of the Competition section. The Country Focus segment includes 7 films from Nigeria and the World Cinema section has 79 films, out of which 35 are co-produced and 13 are co-directed films. ‘Expressionism – The Indo-German Connection section’ will have 8 films.
Samurai Film section, which includes films of famous Japanese directors like Kon Ichikawa and Kenji Mizoguchi, has seven films. The French new wave films of Jean Renoir, coming under the Retrospective section will have six films.
‘Original Glory:100 Years of Indian Cinema’, another segment celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema, includes M S Satyu’s ‘Garam Hava’, B R Panthulu’s ‘Karnan’, Kamal Swaroop’s ‘Om-dar-ba-dar’, Mrinal Sen’s ‘Bhuvan Shome’ and Satyajit Ray’s ‘Charulata’. The Homage section includes films of Rituparno Ghosh, Sukumari, Konnanatu, Raghavan Master and Dakshinamoorthi. Another highlight of the festival will be the presence of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki Duk whose latest film ‘Moebius’ will be screened in the festival.
Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein will head the jury of competition section. Other jury members are Thai filmmaker Aditya Assarat, South African filmmaker Khalo Matabane, actor Gouthami and festival director Peter Scarlet.
The 18th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK 2013) will also feature a total of 211 films from 64 countries. Nearly 9,000 delegates will participate in the week-long fest starting on December 6 and ending on December 13.
The screenings will be held at 11 theatres in the city including Kairali, Sree, Nila, Kalabhavan, Sree Padmanabha, Athulya, Dhanya, Remya, Anjali, Ajantha and Sree Visakh.
