Arpita to make her Bollywood debut with Chauranga
Arpita, the bong beauty is set to make her Bollywood debut with Bikas Ranjan Mishra’s Chauranga. It was only August last year that the actress shared the screen with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar in a national TVC. One year down the line, Arpita is ready to go national joining the league of Bong beauties in Tinseltown Bipasha Basu, Konkona Sen Sharma and Paoli Dam, among others.
Arpita, who eluded the big screen for seven years before returning with Avik Mukhopadhyay’s Ekti Tarar Khonje in 2010, has been taking her career rather slow.
Chauranga, set in the heartland of India, is about a teenage boy’s infatuation with an older girl. The 16-year-old girl is the daughter of a zamindar, essayed by Sanjay Suri and Arpita plays his feisty wife. “She is strong-willed” an antithesis of women in her village. She is not only educated, but her upbringing has made her liberal. She doesn’t believe in the caste system, but doesn’t rebel against her family either,” says Arpita. It’s the dual shades to her character that made Arpita give her go-ahead. “On the one hand, she puts up the facade of being a content better half of the zamindar, on the other hand, she detests her husband’s decisions. Despite knowing that her husband is in an illicit relationship, she doesn’t protest. At the same time, the zamindar too doesn’t infringe upon her territory. In the patriarchal society, she is a rebel. But as a mother, she is extremely supportive. She is the reason why her daughter drives around in a scooter and takes keen interest in academics,” Arpita mentions.
Shooting will begin mid-September in Bolpur and the actress is all geared up.
The film is to be produced by Onir and Sanjay Suri. Chauranga also stars Tannishtha Chatterjee in a pivotal role.
