Oh So Romantic! Bollywood’s Most Passionate Dialogues

When you’re sitting in the dark movie hall with popcorn in one hand and coke in the other; your eyes and ears peeled for the next line that the hero will say to his love and it simply makes your knees go weak. That moment when what he says makes you believe in love. That moment when you know love is the ultimate emotion. You feel it, embrace it and keep going back to those dialogues. Sometimes in your head and at other times you just watch the movie all over again. This has happened to all of us at some point in our lives. Some of these Bollywood dialogues have gone down history for being used in the perfect romantic situations.

Here are some of our picks from each generation that make our hearts gooey:

 Awara (1951):  “Dil kanoon ko nahi maanta…kisi kanoon ko nahi maanta”

This was an intense film that went down history on all counts-romance, drama, justice; but the chemistry between Nargis and Raj Kapoor was a highlight. People still can’t stop talking about how wonderfully scripted, plotted and executed it was. Matters of heart are unpredictable, as unpredictable as a natural catastrophe or a beautiful breezy night in springtime. This dialogue implies that what our hearts want, desire and decide, are beyond any logical explanation. You cannot really talk about justice when someone’s heart makes a decision; you just end up following it. It might be a bitter pill to swallow but it applies to the world as it is today. Hats off to this film that will always remain in our hearts.

Guide (1965):  “Yaad mein nasha karta hoon aur nashe mein yaad karta hoon”

This translates into “I drink when I remember you and I remember you when I am drunk.” You have to give it to the drugs and the drinks for actually drowning people deeper in their love related sorrows and making them feel like they are floating. Ever wondered what a girl feels like when the man who deeply loves her is not reciprocated with the same love and is drowning in a pool of self-destruction? All in the name of love. It’s heart-breaking to watch someone feel the way Dev Anand does here but it’s also his ode to love and the woman he loves.

Kabhie Kabhie (1976): “Meri zindagi ka har ek pal, tere husn se hai judha hua…tere honth thirke toh suba hhai, teri zulf bhikre toh raat hai”

Women go weak when it comes to poetry. And if it’s from a man that loves her, there is no doubt that it’s going to win her over. This has been proven time and again. When you hear something as beautiful and filled with imagery as this, all dedicated in full honesty to a woman, you cannot not take a bow. Amitabh’s over-flowing deep emotion and love for Jaya in the film comes down to something as real as this and we honour that by including it in our list.

Silsila (1981): “Main aur meri tanhayi, aksar yeh baatein karte hai … tum hoti toh kaisa hota … tum yeh kehti, tum woh kehti, tum is baat pe hairaan hoti, tum us baat pe kitni hasti … tum hoti toh aisa hota, tum hoti toh waisa hota … main aur meri tanhayi, aksar yeh baatein karte hai”

It translates into: “Me and my loneliness, we often talk…if you were here then how would it have been…you would have said this, you would have been surprised, you would have laughed…me and my loneliness we often talk about you..” What an arresting dialogue. Silsila is filled with so many of these but this one made it to the top. Who can forget this one? So poetic, so filled with sadness but also hope and love. A powerful storyline and rumors of the film’s storyline being true in real life, made it special too.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988):  “Is hi doobte hue suraj ne humein pehli baar milaya tha … dekhlena, yahi doobta hua suraj hum mein ek din hamesha ke liye mila dega” 

Eternal love became obsessively popular after this film. It was something that a lot of Bollywood movies from the past reflected through dialogues, but this one was way more dramatic and took the meaning to a whole different level. We probably don’t understand what this dialogue would mean to the two lovers when it is being said. But it hits really hard when they both give their lives to prove that they really meant what they said. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful isn’t it?

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge (1995): “Koi bhi ullu ka patha sirf ek angoothi pehana kar tumko mujhse nahi cheen sakta … tum meri ho, sirfmeri”

This was such a revolution in terms of how people perceived the film. When Shahrukh says this with all the love and right he feels for his lady love, a little something fluttered inside every girl’s heart. The dialogue may not be high and mighty but in the context of the film it was the right thing to say at the right time. We’d say wah wah to this one.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) : “Pyar…? Pyar dosti hai…aur agar who meri sab se acchi dost nahin ban sakti to main usse kabhi pyar nahin kar sakta…so simple…pyar dosti hai.”

Sometimes they make it really simple for us don’t they? This is so true because sex, drama and  attraction might fade away in the future but the friendship always remains. Friends understand each other, forget and forgive each other’s mistakes. A friend is always there when you need them and can never put a price on the relationship. Trust is the crux of a friendship and like any other relationship there are hardships but if you trust the person, a solution is always possible, even in the hardest situations. The same values apply to love as well and this dialogue makes all the sense in the world.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001): “Mujhe yakeen hai ki mein sirf isliye janma hoon….ki tumse pyar kar sakun….tum sirf isliye, ki ek din meri ban jahun.”

Who would have thought that Aakash aka Aamir Khan would say this? In the film he is a complete flake when it comes to women. He doesn’t really want to be in a relationship but there is one girl he falls head over heels for. Totally surprising when he utters these words but like we mentioned before, love is not reasonable, logical or predictable. This is a totally adorable and very intense moment in the movie and the dialogue is something everyone who has seen the movie will remember with visual details.

Om Shanti Om (2007): “Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai, ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai. Kehte hain ki…agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaaho to puri kayanat usey tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai” This passionate dialogue was on everyone’s lips when the movie released. It has a larger meaning. It did not get tied down to just love but of course love being the theme in the movie. It is inspirational and anyone out there struggling to get their life in order, be with someone they love or simply achieve something they believe in, will appreciate this. It’s rich in language, supports a higher thought but is also something anyone can relate to.

Ashiqui 2 (2013): “Tumhare ishq se bani hoon main…pehle zinda thi…ab jee rahi hoon main.”

It may sound simple and innocent but that’s what the filmmakers were going for, considering the movie is so intense. The beauty of the dialogue when Shraddha Kapoor says it to her lover Aditya Roy Kapoor, will capture your heart, even if for a second. It’s perfect because she is a simple girl, with her values in place and her head on her shoulders; as loyal as they come. Both the protagonists find a core that they become a part of, which becomes their strength and then their destruction. When they are falling into an abyss, you can’t not think about what they said to each other and the simplicity of the dialogue makes it stay with you.
