Friendship Day may still be a while away but it is never too early to surprise your best friend with some memorable films based on friendship in Hindi cinema. Friendship has always been a highly popular theme in Hindi films and one formula that, most often than not, guarantees success.

Sholay: Any list on friendship movies is incomplete with Sholay. Jai and Veeru are the epitome of friendship, diametrically opposite in nature, yet two people who beautifully complement each other. Superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra share a beautiful on-screen camaraderie that has gone down in the history of Hindi cinema. Though devoid of the quintessential happy ending, Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay portrays friendship that conquers the harshest circumstances and friends that stick together against all odds. It definitely is a classic tale on all accords.

3 Idiots: College life is a time when lifelong friendships are formed. 3 Idiots revolves around three friends, each with their own personal battles, who form a strong bond during their college days. Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘Five Point Someone’, it is a film that goes beyond friendship to showcase how one person can bring about integral changes in the lives of people around him. Through the central characters, convincingly portrayed by Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan, the film shows how friends encourage each other to chase their dreams and stand by each other at all times. The film, which garnered a whopping 200 crore+, at the box office makes for multiple viewings for its lovely moments and entertainment value.

Rang De Basanti: The youth of today can bring about change like no one else and Rang De Basanti demonstrates this with aplomb. A varied mix of friends, who have distinct personal beliefs, set it all aside to bring about a change in society. Rang De Basanti is as much a film about friendship as it is about empowering the youth, taking the reigns in our own hands. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s super hit film shows a bunch of college going students who have no specific goals in life but how the death of their friend changes it all. This National Award winning film is remembered for its talented ensemble cast and the way it integrates contemporary friendship with a larger social message.

Dil Chahta Hai:  Dil Chahta Hai is an urban tale of friendship where three happy go lucky friends discover the true meaning of friendship. Aamir Khan, Akshyae Khanna and Saif ali Khan get in the garb of their characters with ease and take you on a fun, even hilarious, ride. Farhan Akhtar’s debut film is a realistic take on friendship, where real life situations alter even the best of friendships. As the three friends witness ups and downs in their lives, you witness how their friendship gets affected only to emerge stronger at the end. Though a cult of sorts now, this coming of age film was largely well-received only in the metros owing to the urban setting of the film.

Dosti: This 1964 film revolves around the bond of two very unusual characters, a blind boy and a crippled one who are brought together by destiny and forge a unique friendship. Dosti is a film that portrays the true meaning of friendship and how it is a selfless relationship. Produced under the Rajshri Productions banner, the film features Sushil Kumar and Sudhir Kumar as the protagonists that have faced several hardships in life and yet pursue their dreams. The film will overwhelm you with its simplicity and the sacrifice that one friend makes for another. It does not have the happy-go-lucky attitude of modern day friendships but strikes a deeper chord with the genuineness of the emotions involved.
