Seemingly influenced by the lives of Marilyn Munroe and Madhubala, Heroine attempts to take its audiences into the very cesspit of the Hindi film industry: a place where fledgling actresses are arbitrarily chosen and unreasonably made into stars for a star-crazy, entertainment-consuming mass of people, and are then dumped to be trashed and thrashed by all and sundry when they are no more as useful as they were when they got their films rocking. Heroine’s exposé style filmmaking seems to be asking us to start looking beyond the grain and recognise the problematic real faces—the primary among them being manipulation, obsession with profit and a concurrent and false exaltation of a heroine’s body as the epitome of desirable femininity, all for the sake of doing good mass-media business—of the glib and the glamourous in the film industry. The film’s music seems to be raunchy in texture and popular in tune. When seen in consonance with this music, Heroine’s camerawork and direction seem to be producing an amalgam of styles of the documentary, the biopic, the adventure drama and the thriller types.
