Kiran Rao is presenting Anand Gandhi’s Ship of Theseus that has garnered wide critical acclaim and recently the top prize at the Transilvania Film Festival. After travelling to major international film festivals since its world première in Toronto in September 2012, the film will release in India on July 19.

Kiran Rao who saw the film Ship of Theseus at a screening at the Russian Cultural Centre at the Naya Cinema Film Festival last year became absolutely enthralled with the film. She spoke to Anand Gandhi and congratulated him for making a fine film which people can watch over and over again. But the thought of presenting the film hadn’t yet crossed her mind. Only after she met Anand Gandhi she says,” I told him I am happy that a film like this came out from our country and that we should create a fraternity of people who like and enjoy these kind of films. Then we met and discussed everything under the sun.I told him, If there is anything I can do, please ask me. He said, Can you help us put it out there? I said, Definitely. How can I do that? That’s how we decided between us that if I presented it, it would possibly get a bigger platform than it would get if it were releasing on its own. I was more than happy to give my name and my time”.

Kiran Rao denies rumors of starting a production house for indie films. But she maintains that she is working to set up an alternative cinema theater besides working on a new script.
