NFAI will host the re-launch of the book “Bimal Roy: The Man Who Spoke in Pictures” on the 52nd Death Anniversary of the filmmaker

Bimal Roy was a filmmaker known for his technical proficiency; and his deep understanding of humanity was reflected in timeless classics such as Do Bigha Zamin, Devdas, Bandini and Madhumati. The book not only focuses on his popular films, but also sheds a spotlight on his lesser-known Bengali films. His 1944 film Udayer Pathey revolutionized Indian cinema with its mature outlook that was way ahead of his time. The book takes a multi-dimensional approach and in addition to discussing his films in depth, it serves as an insightful portrait of Roy as a person. Authors such as Tapan Sinha, Gulzar, Naseeruddin Shah and Rachel Dwyer have penned the essays in the book.

Bimal Roy : The Man Who Spoke in Pictures, is an anthology edited by Rinki Roy Bhattacharya and‎ Anwesha Arya, that recollects several anecdotes about the master filmmaker and examines his films from a number of perspectives. The program, organized by NFAI in association with Bimal Roy Film Society, will take place on Saturday, 6 January 2018, 10:30am – 1pm at the NFAI (Phase-I) auditorium.

The highlight of the event is that Dr. Mohan Agashe and Chitra Palekar will read passages from the book as a tribute to the auteur. The audience will also have the rare opportunity to take a trip down the memory lane with our selection of audiovisual clips from Roy’s films, which will be screened on the big screen.

The event is free and open to all, seating will be on first come first serve basis.
