Acquired by UTV, Hansal Mehta’s Shahid to release soon.
Hansal Mehta’s Shahid would finally see a theatrical release. After Ship of Theseus and The Lunchbox, Shahid is the third independent film that Disney UTV has aquired.
Shahid is a true story of a slain human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi, who was killed in 2010 by unidentified assailants in his office. From attempting to become a terrorist, to being wrongly imprisoned under a draconian anti-terrorism law, to becoming a champion of human rights (particularly of the Muslim minorities in India), Shahid traces the inspiring personal journey of a boy who became an unlikely messiah for human rights, while following the rise of communal violence in India.
Featuring Raj Kumar as Shahid along with Prabhleen Sandhu and Baljinder Kaur. The film will be released in theaters soon, although the release date is not booked yet.
Shahid was one of the most successful indie films of last year and traveled to several film festivals including Toronto, Dubai and Mumbai. The film won the Silver Gateway Trophy at the 14th Mumbai film festival while Hansal Mehta won the Best Director award for Shahid at the 13th New York Indian Film Festival early this year.
NonStop Sales, a Scandinavian-based international sales company picked up world sales rights for Shahid in 2012.
