An Old Dog’s Diary, a short film portrait of Goan avant-garde painter Francis Newton Souza directed by Shumona Goel and Shai Heredia, has won the best short film award at the 2015 London Film Festival (LFF). The award was bestowed by the British Film Institute (BIF) at 59th edition of LFF.

Goel, a Bombay- based experimental filmmaker and installation artist, who works with 16mm film, slide projections and VHS to produce low-budget films and film installations and Heredia, a Bangalore-based filmmaker and curator of film art and founder of Experimenta, the international film festival for experimental cinema in India, pays tribute to Souza, a radical young art student who co-founded the Bombay Progressive Artists Group in 1947.

The 11 minute long black and white film, assembles in puzzle-piece evocations, revealing the cultural conditions for the painter’s work and its eventual institutionalization. Earlier the film was showcased in the Wavelengths category at Toronto International Film Festival 2015.
