Love is blind, it knows no borders and it returns unannounced just as it vanishes silently when unattended to. And in this coming and going of love a life of indeterminable events and uncontrollable elements is born, a life that has its harmony without justifications and specific reasons that can be tabled in a notebook. Anurag Basu’s Barfi is an account of three people—one deaf and dumb, one characterised by developmental disability and one in possession of all her senses—who wade through the indeterminacies and the errors of life in the 1970s Darjeeling without throwing the ashcan of hatred towards each other. A film that revels in the romance of silent moments and which empties buckets of passion and gentle humour on our heads, Barfi brings to romantic Indian cinema a French flourish in cinematography, colour, composition of frames and music. The harmonica and the violin that resonate through the film enliven it as if it were life unfolding in front of you, becoming its speechless soul. A must watch for both afficianados of experimental avant-garde cinema and the common man and woman looking for an engaging storyline and a beautiful cinematic espousal of love.
