Rituparno Ghosh

Rituparno Ghosh, one of the most talented film directors of the country, died at his home in Kolkata this morning. The award winning filmmaker was 49.

He was suffering from pancreatitis and died of a heart attack at 7.30 am.

Rituparno Ghosh was born in Kolkata on August 31, 1963. His father was a documentary filmmaker and he grew up in a world of movies. Ghosh shot to fame with his direction of a children’s film Hirer Angti in 1994. Ghosh won more than a dozen national awards for his films including Dahan, Unishe April, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Abohomaan  and more recently Chitrangada in 2012. He received several acclaimed international awards as well.

Many film actors and actresses thronged his residence to pay their last respects. State Commerce and Industry minister Partha Chatterjee also visited his home this morning.

Ritupano Ghosh was in the middle of directing a film on the hit TV series Byomkesh Bakshi. Director Sujoy Ghosh of Kahaani was to play the legendary Bengali detective in his directorial venture.

His demise is a huge loss to Indian cinema.
