Bollywood has always been experimental when it comes to movie titles. While some are quirky, some moving, quite a few story-specific and others that are simply outrageous.

Central characters of films have often influenced movie titles. Think Amar Akbar Anthony, Ram aur Shyam, Seeta aur Geeta, Julie, Damini or more recently Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, Haider and more.

In recent times, with the trend of women-oriented films on the rise, titles too have drawn inspiration from these strong central women characters. We look at some of the past films and the many upcoming films that have taken this route to hero the female character.

Akira

AR Murugadoss’ remake of the 2011 Tamil film Mouna Guru, features Sonakshi Sinha in the titular role as Akira. This is a gripping action thriller about a college girl named Akira, who has grown up with the ideals of being self-reliant. Her life spirals out of control when she becomes unwittingly involved in a crime involving corrupt police officers.

Piku

Deepika Padukone played Piku, the protagonist in Shoojit Sircar’s slice-of-life film of the same name. The quirky comedy revolves around the short-tempered Piku Banerjee, her grumpy, ageing father Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan) and Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan) who gets caught between the father-daughter duo.

Naam Shabana

The recent release Naam Shabana is an Indian action spy-thriller starring Taapsee Pannu alongwith Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and others. This spin-off of Baby (2015) provides the back-story of intelligence agent Shabana, played by Pannu and chronicles her journey of becoming a spy.

Noor

Noor is an upcoming Indian drama starring Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role. Noor is the story of a journalist who juggles her work, love and personal life on a day-to-day basis. Things take a dramatic turn when Noor comes across an eye-opening investigative news story.

Tumhari Sulu

Tumhari Sulu is an upcoming comedy film scheduled to start shoot in April 2017. The film revolves around Vidya Balan who plays an RJ and goes by the name Sulochana or Sulu on Air. A happy go lucky person, Sulu works for late night shows and hosts a semi-adult show.

Hansal Mehta’s upcoming biopic ‘Simran’ is reportedly based on an Indian-origin nurse who was called as the Bombshell Bandit after robberies in the USA last year. The story is inspired by the life of Sandeep Kaur, who was sent to prison for robbing a bank to pay off certain debts. Kangana Ranaut has been roped in to play a Gujarati NRI nurse who gets involved in a situation of crime.

Jia Aur Jia

Kalki Koechlin and Richa Chadha will play the titular characters in Jia Aur Jia

Jia aur Jia is a story about two starkly different women who share the same name. Together, they embark on a life-changing journey, heading towards the same fate. Richa Chadha and Kalki Koechlin essay the respective roles of Jia in the film. Directed by Howard Rosemeyer, the film is slated to release in 2017.

Love Sonia

Love Sonia is an upcoming 2017 Indian film directed by Tabrez Noorani. The film features newcomer Mrunal Thakur as the central character along with Richa Chadha, Freida Pinto, Demi Moore, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Rajkummar Rao and Sai Tamhankar. Love Sonia tells the heartfelt and brave story of Sonia, a young Indian village girl whose life irrevocably changes when she gets trapped into the vicious global sex trade network.
