Rima Das’ Village Rockstars won Golden Gateway Award in India Gold Category, Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality Award and Young Critics Choice Award at the festival at the 19h, Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
Bulbul Can Sing is a visceral coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl, Bulbul, living in a village in Assam, fighting her way through love and loss as she figures out who she really is.
Rima Das was overwhelmed by the award the film had won at the festival. A visibly emotional Das’ said, “I am overjoyed to receive this award! For me, making movies is a very fascinating experience. It gives me an opportunity to tell untold stories, stories of women, stories of real people. I feel blessed that I can live so many experiences and emotions through my characters. There are so many things that I hesitate to speak about since my childhood and films give me the freedom to say it all. I am happy that I can do what I love to do.”
She adds, “I still remember very clearly the day I was going for my 1st serial shoot in Assam. I asked my brother to accompany me and he refused. That when my mom said why can’t you do it yourself. Instead of painting a rosy picture, she pushed me into the real world. She helped me be brave and fearless. It was here that we bagged the 1st ever Award for Village Rockstars and now we open our account for Bulbul Can Sing. A special thank you all the members of my cast, all those here and those couldn’t join us here for surrendering to my vision and translating it so beautifully on screen. Thank you to Jury Team, Mami team – Kiran, Anupama and Smriti. Thank you everyone!”
She dedicated this award to her mother. And asked for blessings for the Village Rockstars Oscars journey.
