‘English Vinglish’ Runner – Up at Palm Springs International Film Festival
English Vinglish
Gauri Shinde’s ‘English Vinglish’ is one of the runners – up of the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The 24th edition of the festival held from January 3-14, 2013 screened 182 films from 68 countries.
Australian film ‘The Sapphires’, directed by Wayne Blair and based on the real-life story of an all-female Aboriginal singing group in 1960’s won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.
The other runners-up are Gert Embrechts’ Allez, Eddy! (Belgium/ Luxembourg / The Netherlands), Travis Fine’s Any Day Now (USA), Peter Webber’s Emperor (Japan), Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt(Denmark), Glenn Gaylord’s I Do (USA), Inuk (Greenland), Kon-Tiki (Norway/UK) by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Nikolaj Arcel’s A Royal Affair (Denmark), Michael McGowan’s Still (Canada) and Darko Mitrevski’s The Third Half (Macedonia).
‘Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey’ by Ramona Diaz was awarded the Audience Award Best for Documentary Feature. The FIPRESCI Prize for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year went to Israeli production ‘Fill the Void’ directed by Rama Burshtein. ‘The Cleaner’ directed by Adrian Saba won the New Voices/New Visions Award. The jury also presented a special mention to ‘7 Boxes’ by Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori.
Besides Gauri Shinde’s debut ‘English Vinglish’, Nitin Kakkar’s ‘Filmistaan’, Manjeet Singh’s ‘Mumbai Cha Raja’ and Musa Syeed’s ‘Valley of Saints’ were also screened at the festival.
