Eternal Dialogues of Legendary Hindi Films

Whether it’s the 70s cult classic Sholay or 90s romantic journey Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, dialogues form the heart and soul of every film. In commercial cinema, it’s all about amusing punch lines and mouthing the right phrases at the right time.
Dialogues not only bring the fun element in the story but also form the backbone of the Hindi Cinema Showbiz. On one side, where Bollywood has a consistent stock of typical dialogues like “Apne aap ko kanoon ke hawale kar do” and “Bhagwan ke liye mujhe chhod do”, then on the other side, there are some marvelous gems like “Dosti ki hai nibhani to padegi hi” and “Jab yeh dhaai kilo ka haath kisipe padta hai, toh aadmi uthta nahi, uth jaata hai”, that have transcended the clichés and etched into our memories.

Uttered by Prithviraj Kapoor who portrayed the role of Akbar in Mughal E Azam, this dialogue works out powerfully for the success of the film.
“Babumoshai, zindagi aur maut uparwale ke haath hai. Usse na aap badal sakte hain na main” – This simple philosophy of life penned by Gulzar and voiced by Rajesh Khanna in the climax of the film Anand brought audiences to tears. It’s a dialogue par excellence with tons of grief and sensitivity rooted in it.

“Sara shehar mujhe Loyan (Lion) ke naam se janata hai” – This is one of the most memorable dialogues of Indian Cinema’s popular Villain Ajit. He had his own peculiar style of delivering dialogues that made these lines from the film Kaalicharan iconic.
“Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai” – It was such an iconic dialogue penned by Salim-Javed that not only one but two superstars uttered it in their own signature style. First Amitabh Bachchan in original Don and then Shahrukh Khan in Farhan Akhtar’s remake of the film.
“Rishte mein toh hum tumhare baap lagte hain, naam hai Shahenshah” – This power packed dialogue spoken in Amitabh Bachchan’s baritone voice immediately created waves among his fans just within few days of Shahenshah release.

“Mogambo Khush Hua” – Amrish Puri was truly extraordinary in his role of Mogamo in Shekhar Kapur’s Mr.India and this dialogue is colloquially used even today to convey feelings of ecstasy in filmy way.
“Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailor hain” – This is another gem of a dialogue from celebrated film Sholay that’s been spoken by Asrani as he warns the prison inmates in his distinctive Great Dictator inspired style.
“Tareekh pe tareekh, tareekh pe tareekh, tareekh pe tareekh milti gayi My Lord, Per insaaf nahi mila” – This influential dialogue from the Sunny Deol starrer Damini not only narrates the character’s situation but also reflects upon the realistic condition of the society. “Mere Karan Arjun Aayenge” – It was such a simple line with no great significance but what made it truly exemplary was the Rakhee’s undying believe in the return of her dead sons in the blockbuster film, Karan Arjun.
“Dosti ka ek usool hai, madam: no sorry, no thank you” – Salman Khan as Prem just floored the audiences along with his love interest Suman in his debut film, Maine Pyaar kiya. He utters this dialogue with such warmth and friendliness, that Prem became the ultimate hero of every girl’s dream.
