What made you want to be a part of Fitoor?

I felt that Fitoor has a very romantic script. Being in love in itself is tough and if there are external conflicts, it becomes even more complex. When I first heard that Charles Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ is being adapted into a film, I felt that it is the most apt piece of literature to be made into a movie. The core conflict of the story is based on parental and societal pressures, which are very often seen in Indian society. So Fitoor is very relatable to the Indian audience.

What was the research that you did for the character of Firdaus?

It is inspired from the character in the book and the basic traits and personality is similar. But I was leaning on director Abhishek Kapoor to understand further nuances. Abhishek has a great knack for understanding human nature. He always has very insightful and poignant things to say. And it always makes me wonder how such a young and easy – going guy has so much depth of knowledge.

Do you think Fitoor will bring you the critical acclaim that you’ve been missing in your career so far?

I don’t know. If we knew which films would get us critical acclaim or box – office success, we would do those films only. I do not do films for box – office or critical acclaim. I follow my instinct whether it be Rajnieeti or Mere Brother ki Dulhan. Similarly, I followed my instinct while deciding to do Fitoor.

Why do you think does the industry consider you more of a star than an actress?

It first sounds like a bad thing but it has been a very good thing for me. I consider myself very privileged for where I am today. But yes, we always want more.

When I came to the industry, I did not have any learning as an actress or a dancer but I worked on it and learnt on the job. Earlier, I used to be cautious and worried about getting things right but over the years, I gained a lot of knowledge. And knowledge is power that makes me feel in control. So today when I stand on a set, I enjoy much more.

Fitoor is based on literature. Are you fond of books and if yes, which is your favourite book?

It’s Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”.
