The Man Who Knew Infinity

The film on the Indian genius Ramanujan, is listed as the hot acquisition film and must watch list in ‘Variety’ magazine this week. It is an astonishing story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Indian mathematician whose contributions to Number Theory, Continued Fractions, and Infinite Series revolutionized the field. This sweeping historical film about high science and the tragic repercussions of racism amongst the ostensibly enlightened is a testament to the wonder and precariousness of the genius — and the power of friendship to change the world.

Written and directed by Matthew Brown, the film follows Ramanujan (Dev Patel) from his humble roots in Madras — where opportunities for someone of Ramanujan’s abilities are few — to Cambridge University, where the young prodigy’s visionary theories attract the attention of English mathematician G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons). The film makes for a compelling narrative.

Devika Bhise as Ramanujan’s wife

Devika Bhise (who plays Ramanujan’s wife) found the role very challenging. On playing the wife’s role, she says, “In her time it would have taken her a lot of courage to send her husband to Cambridge knowing that it would be hard on her life. What inspired me was to know how ahead of her time she was. It was challenging to get the complexity of her character across.’’

Born and raised in Manhattan, Devika is an accomplished actress, Indian Classical Bharatanatyam dancer, Hindustani classical vocalist, and jazz vocalist. As Devika gets ready to walk the red carpet, the anticipation, apprehension and excitement of the film slowly unfolds

The film will also be the opening gala film at the 11th edition of Zurich film festival which will be held at September 24th.
