Among the several relationships the Hindi film hero shares onscreen, the Mother-child jodi has been explored and exploited the most to evoke tear-jerking emotions from as early as 60s. And so, there’s a melody for every mood related to this relation.

We revere her. We fight with her. We sometimes get angry. We care about her. We forget her. We hurt her. But we ALWAYS love her, like she does. She’s that special woman in every individual’s life without whom life’s definitely incomplete. One of the oldest and, perhaps, the best song to sing to your mother is Ae maa teri surat se alag from 1966’s Daadi Maa, followed by several melodramatic melodies like Mohammed Rafi’s Maa hai mohabbat ka naam, Lata Mangeshkar’s Tu kitni achchi hai, Kaun si hai woh cheez hai jo which through its simple lyrics and soulful tunes were poetry of adoration for the mother.

New-age filmmakers though explored many other sides of the most precious human relationship. Here’s a list of happy, sad, playful and rock Maa songs from recent times.

Luka Chuppi – Rang De Basanti

While ‘Luka Chuppi’ begins with the mother’s longing for her child, it also ponders over the child’s yearning for his mother. The Prasoon Joshi written, AR Rahman sung-composed and co-sung by Lata Mangeshkar song, is undoubtedly the most emotional song from recent films that beautifully conveys the delicateness of the mother-child bond.

Maa – Taare Zameen Par

This is another ballad about mother-child separation, again an extremely heart-wrenching song. It was written by Prasoon Joshi, sung by Shankar Mahadevan (both won National Awards in their respective categories), and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

Mumma from Dasvidaniya

Unlike the previous melodies, this song about Maa has a happy and earthy tone in lyrics and melody. It’s a child’s joyous praise for his mother. Written, sung and composed by Kailash Kher, the song is quite diverse from the yesteryear’s musical veneration.

Maa Da Ladla Wigad Gaya – Dostana

Who said mother-child relationships and renditions only have to be about happiness and sadness? There’s room for fun too, like in this playful number which depicts a mother’s helplessness when she discovers her son’s sexual orientation. It was composed by Vishal Shekhar, sung by Saleem and penned by Kumaar.

Janam Janam – Phata Poster Nikla Hero

The sweet words, the soothing rendition of a child’s adoration for his innocent and gullible mother is what makes this song special. It is sung by Atif Aslam, written by Irshad Kamil and the music is given by Pritam, and though it isn’t top of the charts, as you hear it, it surely grows on you.

Meri Maa – Yaariyan

A typical poetry revering the mother blended with sounds of electronic guitar, drums and synthesizer and you have a modern-day tune honoring the gentle soul. The soft rock feel of the song composed by Pritam, sung by KK and written by Irshad Kamil is the reason it appeals to today’s bright-young-babes-and-boys.

Chunar – ABCD 2

Again not your regular run-of-the-mill song, it is an angst-ridden number meant to portray an emotional roller-coaster ride as the child reminisces about his mother. It is sung by Arijit Singh, composed by Sachin-Jigar and penned by Mayur Puri.

With such varied compositions being a far cry from their yesteryear counterparts, one wonders what will be the next mood to depict a child’s love for his/her mother!
