A petition seeking formulation for guidelines for regulation of content on online streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, etc. was dismissed by The Delhi High Court.

The Central Government brought to light that the online platforms were neither required to obtain a license from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, nor was its content regulated by it ; leading to the dismissal of the plea by Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V. Kameswar Rao.

The petition was filed by a non-governmental organization, claiming that due to lack of regulation of content, these platforms were showcasing content that is ‘full of vulgarity, religiously forbidden and morally unethical.’

However, the plea was dismissed by the two-judge Bench on grounds of having no public interest.
