Tamasha has thrown a pleasant surprise at the Box Office. One wondered what sort of opening would the film take, considering the fact that it has a niche appeal and isn’t quite designed as an out – and – out mainstream commercial entertainer. Still, director Imtiaz Ali has managed to deliver a classy tale for producer Sajid Nadiadwala and together they have ensured that Ranbir Kapoor enjoys not just the best opening for a film of his this year but also his second best ever since he entered the industry with Saawariya. Here is a look at his Top-10 Best Opening Weekends ever.

Tamasha (2015) – 38.23 crore

With Deepika Padukone in tow, Ranbir Kapoor has managed to shrug off the disappointments of Bombay Velvet and Roy, only to see one of his best opening weekends. With over 38 crore coming in, the film has managed to find a healthy footing in theaters. In fact it is also the eight best opening weekend of 2015 so far, while being even better than Tanu Weds Manu Returns [38 crore] and Dil Dhadakne Do [37 crore].

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) – 62.11 crore

The moment Pritam’s music of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was unveiled, the Ayan Mukherjee directed film turned out to be super hot in the industry as well as amongst the audience. The Karan Johar production was carrying great vibes from Day One of its marketing and the rest was taken care of by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone who were superb in the film. The film took a smashing beginning all over.

Rockstar (2011) – 35 crore

It was the call of ‘Sadda Haq’ that brought in the audience for Rockstar. Ranbir Kapoor went through an entire metamorphosis for this Imtiaz Ali directed film that explored the dark corners of the human psyche. With a unique narrative that the film carried, it wasn’t meant for one and all. Still, it went on to find a good opening and ended up enjoying one of the best starts of the year.

Besharam (2013) – 34.37 crore

For a film that enjoyed a smashing opening day (21.56 crore), Besharam crashed at the Box Office, and how. The film as well as Ranbir Kapoor were rejected by the audience and it was curtains for the Abhinav Kashyap directed affair even before one could realize the disaster that had struck. The film took a nosedive from Day Two itself and the weekend read a sorry figure of just over 34 crore, which was quite sad.

Barfi! (2012) – 34.25 crore

One of the best word of mouth films ever for Ranbir Kapoor, Barfi! started at 8.5 crore opening day, only to take giant strides and see a good weekend of over 34 crore. The audience approved what Ranbir Kapoor had to offer in this Anurag Basu film and soon the word spread that the combo had come up with something superb. Result? A very steady run that eventually saw the film entering the 100 Crore Club.

Raajneeti (2010) – 34 crore

While Ranbir Kapoor is usually seen in solo starrers, he made an exception for Raajneeti where he had a tailor-made role. No wonder, despite the presence of Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpayee around him, Ranbir made quite an impression and delivered well in tandem with Katrina Kaif. The film took a very good opening weekend, though at 93 crore and fell just short of the 100 crore mark.

Roy (2015) – 28.68 crore

Though he had primarily an extended guest appearance in the film, his presence was felt right through this romantic drama that starred Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez. Music did the trick and with chartbusters like ‘Tu Hai Ke Nahi’ and ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’, Ranbir made sure that his young fans weren’t disappointed. The film took a very good opening day (10.4 crore) though it fell over the weekend.

Anjaana Anjaani (2010) – 25.75 crore

Music played a very important part in this Sidharth Anand directed romantic drama that saw Ranbir Kapoor pair up with Priyanka Chopra for the first time ever. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala went all out to lend the film a very up-market appeal and that is something which enthused the yuppie audience as well who came in horde over the first weekend. Power by a good start, the film went on to record decent collections.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) – 25 crore

A film which was delayed for a while, not much was expected from it when its release date was first announced. However, once Pritam’s songs started releasing one after another, the excitement factor started soaring. Moreover, there was good curiosity to check out Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the film, and together they didn’t disappoint. Director Raj Kumar Santoshi delivered a good romantic musical hit here.

Bombay Velvet (2015) – 16.2 crore

Though Bombay Velvet features amongst one of the Top-10 opening weekends of Ranbir Kapoor, the fact remains that at least triple of this amount was expected out of the Anurag Kashyap directed drama. One of the hugest disappointments of not just Ranbir Kapoor but also Bollywood in general, the film was a colossal disaster and made a huge dent in the fortunes of all involved. A truly forgettable affair.
