Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to Ritesh Batra’s feature debut ‘The Lunchbox’ according to Variety.com.

The film stars Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur. It is the story about two people who are brought together by a chance encounter when a dabba (Lunchbox) is wrongly delivered.

The film is represented by German sales agent Match Factory. This deal, negotiated by Michael Weber of The Match Factory, continues Sony Pictures Classics’ long relationship with The Match Factory and Weber.

Lunchbox is produced by India’s Sikhya Entertainment and Dar Motion Pictures and NFDC, Germany’s ROH Films, France’s ASAP Films and the U.S.’s Cine Mosaic.

The film was in competition at the International Critics’ Week at Cannes. It won the Rail d’Or, an independent award at Critics Week given by railway worker film enthusiasts.
