Studio behind Life of Pi files bankruptcy
Rhythm and Hues Studios, the visual effects producer for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi has filed for bankruptcy proceedings in the United States. This comes after a failed bid by Prime Focus (India) to take over the studio.
Earlier, three Hollywood studios, Universal, Fox and Warner Brothers, had loaned $20 million for the studio to sustain its ongoing productions of 300: Battle of Artemisia, Grown Ups-2, The Seventh Son, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, R.I.P.D. and The Hunger Games Catching Fire till April.
Prime Focus (India), a global entertainment services company providing visual effects and stereo 3D conversion based in Los Angeles, was then to acquire the company.
This year the studio won a BAFTA award for its work in Life of Pi and is nominated for two Oscars for Snow White & The Huntsman and Life of Pi.
Formed in 1987, Rhythm and Hues Studios has branches in Mumbai and Hyderabad in India, and in Los Angeles, Kuala Lumpur, Vancouver and Kaohsiung. Some of the noted films that the studio has worked on include Django Unchained, The Bourne Legacy, The Cabin in the Woods, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, etc.
