The Color of the Sun |First ever live-action adaptation of Antoine De Saint-Exupéry’s ‘The Little Prince’ to New York City
Set in New York City, a film inspired by the timeless classic 'The Little Prince'
The Little Prince has been translated into over 300 languages and dialects, with book sales averaging a remarkable 200 million copies worldwide since being published -in NYC- in 1943. In 2015, after more than 75 years of continuous publication, the book legally entered the public domain throughout most of the globe.
Inspired by the story’s place of birth, Paola Sinisgalli – creator, writer and director – pursued its cinematic adaptation. The Color of The Sun, which is to be her first feature-length film project, is a re-imagining of the tale with New York City as its backdrop. The concrete jungle lends itself incredibly well to the Prince’s voyage; a melting pot of cultures and characters meandering through the sprawling metropolis they call home.
This project has already garnered interest from several gifted actors including Luis Guzmàn (The Count of Montecristo, Miami Vice, Narcos), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos, Goodfellas, Summer of Sam) and Philippe Petit (Man on the Wire, The Walk, Mondo). Guzman and Imperioli would be cast in the roles of The Latin King – a remorseful Puerto-Rican Mafia boss who is the first to welcome the Prince when he arrives in the city- and The Businessman – a Wall Street Broker who manages the stars in the sky. While both these roles are recognisable from the original classic, Philippe Petit’s character is based on an unpublished illustration found in the original manuscript and homed at the Pierpont Morgan Library & Museum in New York. In addition to his acting talent, Petit is world-renowned for his high-wire walk between the Twin Towers in 1974. What makes his participation in the project all the more meaningful is that his own father, Edmond Petit, was also a pilot and served alongside Antoine de Saint-Exupéry during the second world war.

Paola Sinisgalli’s vision promises to breathe fresh life into the celebrated tale and give it a modern twist whilst remaining faithful to the original plot and characters. The familiar themes of humanity, childhood and life are explored with creativity and confidence, reminding us to appreciate the little things in life.
That is why New York City is the perfect setting to explore these themes. Juxtaposing the Pilot’s loneliness and the hustle and bustle of the city paints a bittersweet vision of adulthood and the insignificant things we fill our days with. The desert in the original book isn’t portrayed visually, but rather as our protagonist’s internalised emotional state; an emptiness to be filled and enriched when he encounters a mysterious little boy who will change his life by revealing the true meaning of it all.
