The 10th edition of Film Bazaar, organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) announces the seven selected projects for its Work-In-Progress Lab 2016.

The selected projects in the Work-In-Progress Lab 2016 includes Bombay Rose, directed by Gitanjali Rao (Hindi), In The Shadows directed by Dipesh Jain (Hindi/English), Nimmo directed by Rahul Shanklya (Hindi) and produced by Anand L Rai, Once Again directed by Kanwal Sethi (Hindi), The Bioscopewala directed by Deb Medhekar (Hindi/Bengali/English/Dari), The Gold-Laden Sheep & the Sacred Mountain directed by Ridham Janve (Pahadi) and Pratibhasam (The Tetrahedron) directed by Vipin Vijay (Malayalam).

The 7 WIP Lab projects are selected out of a total number of 58 entries received this year. Interestingly, 5 out of the 7 projects in WIP Lab 2016 are by debutant directors.

The ‘Work-in-Progress’ (WIP) Lab is an editing lab, which gives an opportunity to filmmakers to present their projects in a rough-cut stage to a panel of international film experts (mentors) for their feedback to reach and accomplish the final cut.

NFDC Film Bazaar will take place from November 20th to 24th 2016, at the Marriott Resort, Goa, India. Film Bazaar is a development bazaar created exclusively to encourage collaboration between the international and South Asian film fraternity and enhance business opportunities for them.

The 7 selected projects for Work-In-Progress Lab are:

  • Bombay Rose – Animation (Hindi)

DirectorGitanjali Rao graduated with honors as a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, in 1994. She is a self taught animator, filmmaker, illustrator, teacher and theatre artist. She has since, independently Produced, Directed and Animated three Award winning Short films, ‘Orange’, ‘Printed Rainbow’ and TrueLoveStory. She also has a string of very popular and award winning animated commercials to her credit. Gitanjali also conducts workshops and presentations and has been in the jury at various International Film Festivals including The Cannes Critic’s Week 2011.

  • In The Shadows (Hindi/English)

Director: Dipesh Jain is a Director’s Guild Of America (DGA) Student Award recipient and a graduate of the University of Southern California Film School. He has written, directed and produced films in US, Prague and India. His films have screened at numerous international film festivals and won awards including Alfred P. Sloan, Carole Fielding and Best Short at Cleveland Intl FF. He has been selected for Berlinale Talents and Producer’s Lab at the International Film Festival of India. In the Shadows is his debut movie.

  • Nimmo (Hindi)

Director: Rahul Shanklya worked as an assistant director for films like Tanu Weds Manu and Peepli Live. He was a student of National School of Drama where he learned Direction. He has also worked as a casting director for Raanjhana, Rowdy Rathore and Tanu Weds Manu. Nimmo is his debut directorial film.

Cast:  Anjali Patil , Master Karan Dave, Aryan, Sunaina, Sarika & Amar.

  • Once Again (Hindi)

Director:  Kanwal Sethi was born in Amritsar/India. After finishing school, he moved to Germany and started his studies of Political Science and Economics in Dresden. He settled down in Leipzig after travelling extensively different countries. There he worked as assistant director for number of films and at the central theatre for various productions. This was followed by his own stage productions for diverse independent theatres. Parallel to this he started work on his own film projects for which he received various grants and scholarships. FERNES LAND was his debut feature film.

  • The Bioscopewala (Hindi/Bengali/English/Dari)

Director: Deb Medhekar is a direction student from FTII and has made over 100 TV Commercials, award winning short film and The Bioscopewala is his debut fiction feature length film. Deb is also a graphic designer and writer.

Cast:  Danny Denzongpa, Gitanjali Thapa, Adil Hussain, Tisca Chopra, Maya Sarah, Brijendra Kala

  • The Gold-Laden Sheep & the Sacred Mountain (Pahadi)

Director: Ridham Janve is a film graduate of India’s National Institute of Design, Ridham’s short documentaries and fiction films have been screened at various international film festivals. His last film was an official selection in the Indian Panaroma and also represented India in the SAARC film festival 2015 in Colombo.

Cast: Arjun Singh, Lokendra Gurung

  • Pratibhasam /The Tetrahedron (Malayalam).

Director: Vipin Vijay is a multiple award winning contemporary Indian screenwriter, sound designer, film director, and independent film producer. His films have been shown in reputed international film festivals as well as in museums and galleries across the world. His works have to this date won three international awards including the short Tiger award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and sixteen awards within India. The prestigious Oberhausen International Film Festival 2015 honored him with a profile.

Projects from the past editions of WIP Labs

Since the inception of the Work-in-Progress lab, most of the films that have been through this lab have premiered at leading international films festivals while some have enjoyed a successful theatrical run.
