Starring Rajkummar Rao in the titular role, and featuring a stellar cast including Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and Raghubir Yadav, the film will have four screenings at the festival, which will be held from 19-30 April in New York City.

The Tribeca Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the USA, and was founded by Hollywood legend Robert De Niro and American producer Jane Rosenthal in 2002, with a mission to revitalize lower Manhattan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Since then the festival has grown into one of the most important celebrations of films and filmmakers worldwide.

Newton is the only Indian fiction feature to be selected in competition at Tribeca this year. Thrilled about making it to such a prestigious festival after Berlinale, director Amit V Masurkar says, “Tribeca is one of the most exciting film festivals in the world. It has a fearless and independent voice. We’re looking forward to showing Newton to the cinema-loving New York audience.” Newton is Amit V Masurkar’s second film after the sleeper hit Sulemani Keeda in 2014.

Manish Mundra, the Founder of Drishyam Films and Producer of Newton says, After the warm audience and critical reception at Berlinale, we are very excited to take Newton to such a renowned festival as Tribeca for its North American premiere. This film is the result of our vision — to tell stories that are local in flavour but global in scope, and I’m sure our journey has just begun.”

Synopsis
Newton is a razor sharp political black comedy that takes place on an election day in Central India. Rajkummar Rao, whose star is on the rise following strong, highly appreciated performances in films like Aligarh and Queen, plays Newton, a rookie clerk on election duty in a conflict-ridden jungle of Chhattisgarh, who tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of an attack by Maoist rebels.
